What would you get to do as EDW Data Modeler at OP?

At OP, we're taking digitalization in the banking sector to the next level to continue providing top quality services to our four million customers. In this process, Enterprise data warehousing (EDW) plays a significant role, and we need your help. We're currently seeking a passionate data modeler to ensure EDW's usability in the Data Warehousing Tribe.

As a data modeler, you will work hands-on with the logical and physical data models of EDW. It will be your responsibility to ensure that the development teams working around EDW follow architectural guidelines regarding data modeling. You will work closely with data modelers in separate development teams, making sure that data consumers’ requirements steer modeling decisions, and that modeled data is published in an understandable and reusable way.

To be successful in this role, you must be able to transform new data requirements into user-friendly data models, understand reference data models and how they are used, and continuously improve data modeling and development processes. Knowledge of different data modeling styles and approaches, especially regarding Data Warehousing, is mandatory. We have an OP reference data model that provides references and glossary definitions to be used in all system development, and the Teradata Financial Services Data Model (FSDM) is another important reference data model used in EDW development.

Our EDW runs on Teradata technology, and while Teradata-specific knowledge is not required, it's helpful to understand physical data modeling related topics (keys, indexing, data types, etc.) on some DB platforms. You'll work also with lead developers (regarding ETL), solution analysts (regarding requirement analysis and refinement), and tech leads (on data architecture topics). Your stakeholders outside of our tribe come from diverse backgrounds, so excellent communication skills and the ability to discuss the impacts of technical solutions on the business objectives and vice versa are critical. This puts you in the heart of banking and gives you a great view across different initiatives throughout the OP Financial Group.

What responsibilities and duties you would have in this role?

Define and govern standards that secure development of a usable and harmonized consumer interface used by analysts, report developers and client applications of EDW. Ensure the data development teams follow the key principles:

  • Data in EDW is published in a re-usable manner.

  • Requirements from consumers drive EDW development.

  • Development of consumer interface follows unified standards.

  • Documentation creation for the utilizers (such as metadata management) is automated.

  • Data modeling and publishing best practices are understood and used by all teams.

Collaborate tightly within our modelling chapter (a small group of experts) which is owning the modelling process and safeguarding the correct competences in the modelling area.

Contribute in day-to-day work to refining of new and changing requirements from modelling perspective.

Make sure consumer interface fulfils the functional and technical requirements from utilizers.

Contribute to improving the management and usability of business vocabulary together with stakeholders.

What we hope from you?

We hope that you find our core values (Responsibility, Succeeding Together, and People First) as important and motivating as we do. Otherwise, we believe the following will help you to succeed in this role:

  • Good understanding or at least endless curiosity of banking business

  • Previous experience of conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling

  • Previous experience of using reference data models (e.g. Teradata FSDM, IBM industry models…)

  • Experience of using data modeling tools and good command of SQL

  • Excellent communication skills, positivity, and the mindset of striving for success as a team

  • Finnish proficiency is a big advantage for you to contribute independently as many of the documents and terminologies are only in Finnish. In case you’re not a native Finnish speaker then please describe in your application on which level are you with your Finnish studies.

The members of our Data Warehousing Tribe find it awesome that we get to work with the second largest amount of data in Finland (only the Finnish state deals with more) and EDW solutions that affect services used by millions of people daily.
